Scouting for Litter
March 14th, 2021
As the Scouts looked closely, we discovered that there was trash all over Califon. We knew that this litter would be tough on wildlife, as well as pollute our rivers, streams, and air. So, on March 14, 2021, the Califon Scouts BSA Troop 192 dispersed around town and cleaned up any litter in sight. This was a simple, COVID-friendly activity that left the Scouts, and the town, feeling satisfied. We were shocked with the amount of trash we picked up, all within a 60 minute period.
In order for this cleanup to be possible, the Scouts met at the Municipal Building in Califon and split up into four groups. We made sure to use reusable buckets and gloves during our cleanup, so we wouldn’t produce even more trash with plastic bags and/or gloves. Some Scouts visited the park and trail area, some headed up Main Street, and others scanned the park and near the river for any trash. By doing this, we saved time and hit more areas in town. After about an hour, the groups reunited back at the Municipal Building, proudly displaying their five-gallon buckets chock-full with litter. In total, we collected around twelve 5-gallon buckets, along with a few other interesting finds (including a deer skeleton!).
Once we completed our successful cleanup, the town looked squeaky-clean. Thanks to the Scouts, you will notice less and less litter around town. It was surprising and disappointing to see so much trash in such a little town. Remember, if you happen to notice a piece of litter while you are walking down the street, pick it up and dispose of it safely! Every piece matters. If we all do our part, we can help to cut down on pollution in our towns.
