NOTICE – HERBICIDE APPLICATION IN CALIFON ISLAND PARK ON JULY 29 – 31, 2025

July 22, 2025

The New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team was hired by Ridge and Valley Trout Unlimited to assist with its restoration of the banks of South Branch Raritan River located in Califon Island Park. The existing riverbank is choked with invasive species that provide minimal habitat for our native plants and animals. Trout Unlimited has already manually cleared many hundreds of thorny invasive shrubs. The Strike Team will be following up by treating resprouting shrubs with herbicide to make way for future planting of native trees and shrubs that will better shade the riverbanks and provide great habitat for pollinators and birds. The Raritan Headwaters Association has funded and organized the native planting activities. Please contact Jessica Daehnke, Deputy Clerk, at 908-832-7850 x 204 if you would like a copy of the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the herbicides that will be applied.

THE HERBICIDE WILL ONLY BE APPLIED IN THE RIVER AND ON THE RIVERBANK, NOT THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE PARK.  IT WILL NOT AFFECT THE PLAYGROUND, BALLFIELDS, PAVILLION, SENSORY GARDEN, ETC.
