Alternative thoughts to typical bagged fall leaf pickup – Cathy Smith

Did you know that mulching is quicker and a more efficient leaf removal routine than raking? Mulched leaves left on the grass create a natural fertilizer, providing water and nitrogen.

And, if you have space for a compost pile, did you know that composting leaves is one of the smartest things you can do for your garden? It’s a great way to mulch, fertilize, and generally improve your soil. It doesn’t take up that much room if you just follow a few simple rules for composting leaves . Just google and you will find dozens of great ideas and how to videos.

At our June 15, 2023, Council meeting, we had a lively and productive conversation about alternatives to our typical bagged fall leaf pickups.

The leaf pickups are not only expensive for the town but having to bag leaves is also pretty annoying!

So, even though summer is just starting, we want to begin a conversation now about some great options to bagging leaves in the fall. We welcome your feedback and hope you will share your own thoughts and ideas about disposing of those fall leaves with us!
