Volunteering and Community Involvement

July 11, 2017

By Council Members Joseph and Megan Riccio

“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” -Unknown

When we think of Califon it evokes a certain feeling or connotation. Perhaps all places do. Nonetheless, we like to think of Califon as special. Personally, Califon seemed like a haven, a bit insulated from the larger Hunterdon County, and certainly, the antithesis of what one might think of as typical New Jersey. But prior to making a commitment to be involved in some way, it was difficult to understand exactly where the personality of our Borough is born. We’ve come to realize that, in large part, the personality that is Califon, that feeling that is evoked daily, whether it be at a holiday parade, or just a regular work day, often begins as an individual effort. Of course, these passionate individuals often find like-minded individuals that form devoted groups; our fire and rescue squads, our school board, our borough hall. Once involved, it seems a better vantage point to understand that the charm of Califon really lies within its citizens, and through their volunteerism, interest and inspiration, Califon remains that quintessential small town.

While Califon benefits greatly from all who have dedicated their time and talents; we are always excited to welcome new volunteers on all town committees. Community representation at town council meetings is advantageous to gaining a better understanding of municipal operations and provides a great forum for open discussion about town matters that directly impact residents.

The sustainability of our town is contingent upon our volunteers. We encourage everyone, young and old, to consider making time for Califon, whether you choose to make a standing commitment to a committee or simply attend public meetings and share opinions and ideas. No contribution of time and talent is too small to go unnoticed.
